Why We Use Electronic Drum Kits — And Why It Matters

This is something most drum schools won't talk about, but it matters for your child's health.

Acoustic drums are loud — really loud. At the player's ear, a snare drum hit can reach 100–120 decibels depending on how hard it's struck. That's in the same range as a chainsaw or a rock concert. Sustained exposure at those levels can cause permanent hearing damage, and children's ears are more vulnerable than adults'. That's why Sam ALWAYS wears hearing protection when playing gigs or recording/playing acoustic drums.

Music Gym's founder Al knows this from personal experience — he has partial hearing loss on one side, caused by years of exposure to acoustic drums. It's the reason we made a deliberate choice to equip our drum studios with Yamaha DTX electronic drum kits instead of acoustic kits.

What this means for your child:

Teacher-controlled volume — The teacher sets the sound level for the room. Every pupil hears the kit at a safe, consistent volume through the PA system. There are no sudden sound spikes that could damage hearing.

Same feel, safer sound — Yamaha DTX kits are designed to feel like real drums. The pads respond to how hard you hit them, the cymbals respond naturally, and the kick pedal feels authentic. Your child learns proper technique on an instrument that plays like an acoustic kit — without the hearing risk.

Headphone practice at home — If your child gets a DTX kit at home, they can practise with headphones at any time without disturbing the rest of the household. No soundproofing needed, no neighbour complaints, less hearing risk — but keep an eye on how loud the headphones are. Don't keep turning them up!

We're not against acoustic drums — they're incredible instruments and many of our pupils go on to play them. But we believe the learning environment should be safe first, and electronic kits give us that without compromising on feel or technique.

What Makes Our Drum Lessons Different

4 Yamaha DTX electronic drum kits — Our dedicated drum room has 4 Yamaha DTX kits, a PA system, and music stands. Every pupil gets their own kit for the duration of the lesson. No sharing, no waiting, no need to buy a kit before you start.

Rock and pop focus — We teach the music your child actually wants to play. From Foo Fighters to Billie Eilish, Queen to Twenty One Pilots — our lessons are built around songs that inspire. We follow the Yamaha Drum Encounters curriculum, a structured rock and pop course with full grading from beginner to Grade 8.

Small groups, big energy — Group drum lessons have a maximum of 5 pupils. There's nothing like the energy of five people drumming together — it builds rhythm, timing, and the ability to play as part of a band. It's how real drummers learn.

Safe sound levels — Every lesson runs at teacher-controlled volume. Your child's hearing is protected while they learn.

Accredited grades that count — We are a dual Rockschool and Yamaha exam centre. Drum grades from Debut to Grade 8 carry UCAS points at the higher levels — the same value as classical grades from ABRSM. Over 3,000 grade passes across all instruments since 2011.

We also teach 1-to-1 — For pupils who prefer individual attention, or for more advanced players preparing for higher grades, we offer private 1-to-1 drum lessons with Sam. These are 30-minute sessions tailored entirely to your goals.

Drum Lessons by Age

Ages 7–11 (Group)

The perfect starting age for drums. Pupils join our Yamaha Drum Encounters group (up to 5 per class) and learn drums from scratch on our DTX electronic kits. They'll be playing recognisable beats within weeks and can work towards their first Rockschool grade when ready. 60-minute lessons, £89.38/month.

Ages 12–18 (Group or 1-to-1)

Teenagers often come to us already playing a bit and wanting to level up. We build on what they know, plug the gaps in technique, and get them grade-ready. Many of our teen drummers go on to perform at our showcase concerts — and some have gone on to study music at college. Group or 1-to-1 options available.

Adults (1-to-1)

Adult drum lessons are available as private 1-to-1 sessions with Sam. Whether you've always wanted to play drums but never had the chance, or you're a returning player wanting to sharpen your skills, lessons are relaxed, structured, and built around the music you want to play. £128.12/month.

What You'll Learn

In your first term, a beginner drummer at Music Gym will typically cover:

  • How to hold drumsticks correctly (matched grip)
  • Basic single-stroke and double-stroke rolls
  • The standard rock beat — kick, snare, hi-hat
  • Fills and transitions between sections
  • Reading basic drum notation
  • Playing in time with a click track and with backing music
  • Playing along to at least 2–3 complete songs
  • Introduction to dynamics — playing quietly and loudly with control

By the end of the first year, most pupils are ready for their Rockschool Debut or Grade 1 exam — and many achieve it with distinction.

The Yamaha Drum Encounters Course

Music Gym is the only Yamaha Music School in Hertfordshire. Our drum lessons follow the Yamaha Drum Encounters curriculum — a structured, graded rock and pop drumming course that's been developed over decades. It covers everything from beginner basics through to advanced technique, independence, improvisation, and performance skills.

The course is designed to keep pupils motivated by teaching the music they love, while building a solid foundation in technique, timing, and musicianship. Nothing matches the energy of a room full of people drumming together — it's one of the most exciting things we offer at Music Gym.

Do I Need to Buy a Drum Kit for Home Practice?

Not to start. We provide Yamaha DTX electronic drum kits for every pupil during lessons, so you can try it out risk-free.

When your child is ready to practise at home (usually after the first month or two), an entry-level electronic drum kit is all they need — and they start from around £250–£350. That's a fraction of the cost of an acoustic kit, and your child can practise with headphones so nobody else in the house hears a thing.

We'll advise on exactly which model to buy when the time is right. The key advantage of electronic kits at home: your child can practise whenever they want, at any volume, without disturbing anyone — and without risking their hearing.

Frequently Asked Questions — Drum Lessons

What age can my child start drum lessons?

Group lessons start at age 7. At that age, children have the coordination and concentration to hold drumsticks properly and follow a 60-minute group lesson. For younger children interested in rhythm and percussion, our keyboard and music theatre classes from age 5 are a great stepping stone.

Do I need to buy a drum kit?

Not to start. We provide Yamaha DTX electronic drum kits in every lesson. When your child is ready to practise at home, we'll advise on an affordable electronic kit — usually around £250–£350.

Why electronic kits instead of acoustic?

Hearing safety. Acoustic drums produce sound spikes of up to 120 decibels — enough to cause permanent hearing damage, especially in children. Our electronic kits let the teacher control the volume at a safe level, while still giving pupils the authentic feel of playing real drums.

How much do drum lessons cost?

Group drum lessons (ages 7+) are £89.38/month. 1-to-1 lessons are £128.12/month. All prices are pro-rata across 41 teaching weeks via monthly GoCardless direct debit. There's a £15 joining fee and a free taster lesson for beginners. See full pricing.

Can my child take drum exams?

Yes. We're an accredited Rockschool exam centre. Pupils can take drum graded exams from Debut through to Grade 8 right here at Music Gym — no need to travel to an external exam venue.

Are drums loud? Will lessons damage my child's hearing?

Not at Music Gym. Our electronic kits let the teacher control the volume at a safe level, significantly reducing the risk of hearing damage compared to acoustic drums. Every lesson runs at a teacher-set volume — your child gets the full drumming experience with far less risk to their hearing.

Where are you based?

Meriden Community Centre, Garsmouth Way, Watford, WD25 9ET. We serve families from across Watford and surrounding areas including Bushey, Abbots Langley, Kings Langley, Croxley Green, Garston, and North Watford.
