Music Gym is Watford's specialist rock and pop keyboard school. Based at the Meriden Community Centre (WD25 9ET), we teach piano and keyboard to children from age 5 through to adults — from absolute beginners to experienced players working towards Rockschool Grade 8.
Every pupil plays on our Yamaha PSR series keyboards during lessons. You don't need to bring your own instrument — just turn up and play.
Parents almost always search for "piano lessons" — but what most children actually learn on (and what works best for rock and pop music) is a keyboard. Here's the honest difference, and why it matters for your child.
A piano is an acoustic instrument with 88 weighted keys. It's large, expensive, needs regular tuning, and is designed for classical repertoire. A keyboard is an electronic instrument — smaller, lighter, more affordable, and far more versatile. It can produce hundreds of different sounds, connect to headphones for silent practice, and is the instrument used across rock, pop, and modern music production.
At Music Gym, we teach on Yamaha PSR series keyboards — the same professional instruments used in studios and on stage. But here's the key point: our pupils learn proper piano skills too. The Yamaha Play For Keeps curriculum teaches both hands, music reading, chord theory, and technique — the same foundations you'd get from classical piano lessons, but applied to music your child actually wants to play.
The result? Your child can sit down at a piano and play it. They can also pick up a keyboard and perform pop songs, use different sounds, and understand how modern music works. They get the best of both worlds — and they don't need a £3,000 piano at home to practise.
Ollie has been teaching keyboard and piano at Music Gym for over 10 years. He's one of the longest-serving members of the team and has guided hundreds of pupils from their very first lesson through to Yamaha or Rockschool Grade 8. Parents and pupils consistently name Ollie as the reason they stay year after year.
★★★★★"My daughter just completed her Grade 8 successfully. She has been learning at Music Gym since a beginner over 7 years ago. The whole of the Music Gym Team — Alan, Ollie (her teacher), Claire and others — have been a fantastic support throughout and helped my daughter during her learning."
★★★★★"Both my children have keyboard lessons at The Music Gym and it feels like home for us. Watching my once shy 7 year old flourish into a confident Grade 6 level teenage musician has been a wonderful journey, and now my 8 year old who really wasn't sure has been given the confidence to take his Grade 1. Brilliant teachers, fun and modern music."
★★★★★"Music Gym is incredible! Max (12) is currently on Grade 4 keyboard and Sophia (9) is on Grade 2. Max even describes the studio as his 'second home.' A special shout-out to Ollie, whose passion has truly inspired my kids. It's the perfect balance of building technical skill and fostering a genuine love for music!"
Our dedicated keyboard room has 18 Yamaha PSR series keyboards with headphones, music stands, and a PA system. Every pupil gets their own keyboard for the duration of the lesson. No sharing, no waiting, no need to buy an instrument before you start.
We teach the music your child actually wants to play. From Billie Eilish to Coldplay, Ed Sheeran to Queen — our lessons are built around songs that inspire. We follow the Yamaha Play For Keeps curriculum, which is the only structured rock and pop keyboard course with full grading from beginner to Grade 8.
Unlike pure "keyboard lessons" that only teach chords in one hand, our curriculum teaches proper two-handed playing, music reading, and technique. Your child learns piano skills on a keyboard — so they can play either instrument with confidence.
Our youngest pupils (ages 5–6) learn in small groups of up to 5, giving them the attention they need at that age. Ages 7–11 join groups of up to 8. It's small enough for individual attention but big enough for children to learn to play together.
We are a dual Rockschool and Yamaha exam centre. Keyboard grades from Debut to Grade 8 carry UCAS points at the higher levels — the same value as classical piano grades from ABRSM. Over 3,000 grade passes across all instruments since 2011.
For pupils who prefer individual attention, or for more advanced players preparing for higher grades, we offer private 1-to-1 keyboard and piano lessons. These are 30-minute sessions tailored entirely to your goals.
The perfect starting age for keyboard. Young beginners join our Yamaha group (up to 5 per class) and learn the basics of music — notes, rhythm, timing, and their first simple tunes. 45-minute lessons designed for small hands and short attention spans. £49.83/month.
Pupils join our Yamaha Play For Keeps group (up to 8 per class) and learn keyboard from scratch — or continue from the 5–6 course. They'll be playing recognisable songs within weeks and can work towards their first Rockschool grade when ready. 60-minute lessons, £89.38/month.
★★★★★"My daughter is doing Grade 5 keyboard. Ollie is an amazing teacher. His approach is both very encouraging and inspiring toward the students."
Teenagers often come to us already playing a bit and wanting to level up. We build on what they know, plug the gaps in technique and theory, and get them grade-ready. Many of our teen keyboard pupils go on to perform at our showcase concerts. Group or 1-to-1 options available.
Adult keyboard and piano lessons are available as private 1-to-1 sessions with Ollie. Whether you're a complete beginner who always wanted to learn, or a returning player who hasn't touched a keyboard in years, lessons are relaxed, structured, and built around the music you want to play. £128.12/month.

By the end of the first year, most pupils are ready for their Rockschool Debut or Grade 1 exam — and many achieve it with distinction.
Music Gym is the only Yamaha Music School in Hertfordshire. Our keyboard lessons follow the Yamaha Play For Keeps curriculum — a structured, graded rock and pop keyboard course that's been developed over decades. It covers everything from beginner basics through to advanced technique, improvisation, harmony, and performance skills.
The course teaches proper piano technique — two-handed playing, music reading, chord progressions, and dynamics — but applies it to rock and pop repertoire instead of classical. Your child learns to play songs they actually like, which means they practise without being asked.
Not to start. We provide Yamaha keyboards for every pupil during lessons, so you can try it out risk-free.
When your child is ready to practise at home (usually after the first month), a basic Yamaha keyboard is all they need — and they start from around £80–£100. That's a fraction of the cost of an acoustic piano, and your child can practise with headphones so nobody else in the house has to listen to scales on repeat.
We'll advise on exactly which model to buy when the time is right. No pressure, no upselling — just honest advice based on what works for your child's age and level.
For most children, keyboard is the better starting point. It's more affordable, more portable, more versatile, and teaches the same core music skills as piano. Our Yamaha course teaches proper two-handed playing and music reading — your child will be able to play a piano too. If your child specifically wants classical piano, we can discuss 1-to-1 options.
Group lessons start at age 5. Our 5–6 age group uses a curriculum designed specifically for young beginners, with smaller groups and shorter sessions.
Ages 5–6 group: £49.83/month. Ages 7–11 group: £89.38/month. 1-to-1 lessons: £128.12/month. All prices are pro-rata across 41 teaching weeks via monthly GoCardless direct debit. There's a £15 joining fee and a free taster lesson for beginners. See full pricing.
Yes. We're an accredited Rockschool exam centre. Pupils can take graded exams from Debut through to Grade 8 right here at Music Gym — no need to travel to an external exam venue. Our pupils have achieved over 3,000 grade passes since 2011.
