Rockschool Grades in Watford

Music Gym is an official Rockschool Exam Centre. Prepare for industry-recognised qualifications with over 3,000 grade passes to date.

What Are Rockschool Grades?

Rockschool (RSL Awards) grades offer a structured, industry-recognised pathway for contemporary musicians to gain qualifications in guitar, bass, drums, piano, and vocals. Unlike traditional classical exams, Rockschool focuses on popular music genres like rock, pop, metal, and funk.

They are designed to boost technical proficiency, musicality, and theory knowledge, with grades 6-8 offering UCAS points for UK university applications. Whether you're a beginner or advanced musician, Rockschool provides a clear progression from Grade 1 to Grade 8.

At Music Gym, we also offer Yamaha music exams, which are accredited by RSL Awards. This means you have flexibility in choosing the exam pathway that best suits your musical goals—whether Rockschool or Yamaha, both are globally recognised qualifications.

What is a Rockschool grade exam?

Rockschool (RSL) is an Ofqual-regulated awarding body that offers graded music exams in rock and pop instruments. Grades run from Debut through to Grade 8, with Grades 6–8 carrying UCAS points. Exams are performance-based and use contemporary repertoire.

Which instruments can I take Rockschool grades in at Music Gym?

We prepare students for Rockschool grades in guitar, drums, bass, keyboards and vocals. All exams are taken at our registered exam centre at the Meriden Community Centre, Watford.

How long does it take to reach each grade?

Progress varies by student, but as a rough guide most students are ready for their first grade exam within 12–18 months of starting lessons. We don't rush grades — students sit exams when they're genuinely ready.

Do I have to take grades, or can I just play for fun?

Grades are entirely optional. Many of our students never take a formal exam and simply enjoy playing music. Grades are there if you want a qualification or a structured goal to work towards.
